Engine Positioning
Probably
no other element of website development is as important as search engine
positioning.
Depending on the type of business, 30 to 60 per cent of traffic comes
from the search engines. It is absolutely essential to have at least top
20 placement for all your major keywords - those identifiers which you
want people to be able to use to find your website.
Search
engine positioning is not the only important thing: there are many more
elements to producing a successful website, but it is probably the most
vital. Even the most elaborate or beautifully done site is useless if no
one can find it.

Unfortunately,
as the Internet has grown, the competition for these top listings has
grown as well. When the Net was new, there might have been only a few
hundred or a few thousand matches for any particular keyword.
Now the matches measure in the hundreds of thousands, even into the
millions, for even the most obscure keyword.
It is easy to get placement on very specific keywords, such as
"Lake Taupo trout fishing". As the keywords get more general,
hence more useful for generating traffic, for example, "Taupo trout
fishing", "trout fishing", and on to "fishing",
it is more and more difficult to get good positioning.
Yet it can be done. It
is the design of the web site, and the knowledge and effort of its
webmaster which, more than anything else, determines the success of a
website in getting good positioning.
Rather than construct a web site, then go back and try to identify the
keywords, then put them into metatags, the best way is to identify the
keywords as the first step, before even the first web page is designed.
Then build the entire web site around the keywords.
